HEAD OF AIR-CONDITIONING & REFRIGERATION ENGINEERING DEPARTMENT AT AL-MUSTAQBAL UNIVERSITY COLLEGE, PUBLISHES A NEW SCIENTIFIC RESEARCH IN THE JOURNAL OF POWER SOURCES

Part of the continued research accomplishments of the Air-Conditioning & Refrigeration Engineering Department, a new scientific research for its Head, Assist Prof. Dr. Azher M. Abid has been published in the Journal of Power Sources. It is remarkable to note that this journal is classified within the first quarter of Q1 SCOPUS & Clarivate, with an Impact Factor 9.794.
The research is entitled

"Three-dimensional numerical study of the effect of an air-cooled system on thermal management of a cylindrical lithium-ion battery pack with two different arrangements of battery cells"
In this research, a simulation of three-dimensional battery pack (B-PK) has been performed, containing 16 battery cells (BCL) with aligned and non-aligned arrangements. This B-PK has been placed in a square air duct where air enters from the top of the B-PK and exits from the bottom of the batteries.
This experiment has mainly focused on changing the air velocity (V-AR) that enters the B-PK from 0.03 to 0.09 m/s for three charge/discharge cycles within 2000 seconds.
The results attained have showed that extending the charging/discharging duration of B-PK until the third cycle leads to an increase in the temperature of B-PK. In fact, the effect of changing air velocity has been most noticeable in the second and third cycles of the battery charging process. It has also been noticed that the maximum (T-MX) and average (T-AV) temperatures of the B-PK as well as the temperature of the air leaving the battery pack are reduced when the V-AR is increased.
However, the study has revealed as well that the central batteries of the B-PK have a higher temperature, whereas the batteries in the corners have a lower temperature, as per BCLs analysis. Accordingly, it can be concluded that utilization of an aligned arrangement of batteries in the package shall reduce the T-AV of the B-PK when compared to an unaligned arrangement of batteries.
